Norm Scott

The rear of the Peugeot S/C, showing that it had a fully independent rear end rather than VW swing-axle, and definitely a non-VW transmission. This was the ex Vin Smith Sevin. The Sevin originally had a flat four engine from a front-wheel-drive Tempo Matador light pickup and the Tempo's gearbox, before being converted to Peugeot power. (Pics: Terry Walker) |
Norm Scott's racing career has embraced just about all forms of competition. He raced motorcycles at Caversham, Mooliabeenie and Yanchep, and the original "stock cars" at Claremont Speedway, before moving to New South Wales.
There he built up an Improved Production Peugeot 203, and made his debut at Oran Park in 1963. For the next two years he raced consistently in the Peugeot at Hume Weir, Warwick Farm, Catalina Park, Oran Park and Bathurst, with some class wins.
Returning to WA in 1965, he joined the WASCC and started racing the Peugeot 203 in earnest at Caversham. The bright red Pug was a familiar spectacle, and he added to his stable by buying Vin Smith's Sevin, soon renamed the Peugeot S/C, which he extensively modified. The 203 saloon, also extensively modified, was now raced in the Sports Saloon category. At the same time he raced competitively at Claremont Speedway in the Production Car category, also in a Peugeot 203 and then a 404, and in 1968 he had an excellent year there with one 1st, three 2nds and a 6th in five races.
The supercharged Peugeot racing car and the Peugeot 203 sports sedan were campaigned at Wanneroo Park during 1969 but Norm Scott's attention was increasingly focussed on Claremont Speedway, where there was very good prize money, and by 1970 he had abandoned circuit racing, moving into a speedway Torana production sedan.
